My Poor Poor Dog

Yesterday we took my dog Bella in to see the vet because she has been limping on her back leg for about a week now. She told us a few different things it could be but nothing major. I guess Dachshund's are prone to having leg problems so it wasn't anything to be concerned about. She gave us some pain medication for Bella to take for a little while just in case she is in pain from her foot. the vet continued to ask questions and she asked about her vaccinations. She had not been up to date and we knew that so we decided to get her caught up since we were already there anyways. So they take her to the back and give her her shots and bring her out a little while later. As we were checking out at the front desk Bella starts to vomit. I went to the bathroom to get some paper towels to clean it up thinking she was just reacting to the pain medicine they gave her. By the time I got back she had thrown up again and was looking very tired and weak. The girl at the front desk quickly took her to the back area again to see what was wrong.

After what felt like forever the vet came out to tell us what was wrong. Apparently they give the same amount of vaccine to little dogs that they give to big ones. Generally little dogs don't handle it very well sometimes and they can react badly. Bella was not only vomiting. Her heart rate dropped and she was very pale. I was beyond freaked out!!!!!! The vet said that once they find out that the dog reacts this way, in the future they give the dog benadryl before hand to prevent any side effects. WHY THE HECK DIDN'T THEY WARN ME ABOUT THAT AND GIVE IT TO HER BECAUSE IT IS SO COMMON???? You would think they would do it just to be safe!!!!

So they wanted to keep her over night to observe her but we cannot afford that so we took her home with the emergency contact phone number just in case something went wrong.

Once we got home she seemed OK at first but then it all went down hill. She started trying to bite the air and she started biting her hind foot so hard that we heard cracking. It made me sick. Then she started to scratch everywhere on her tiny little body and her face started to swell up so big, her eyes were so puffy!! When she started to bite Michael harder than just a play bite we decided to take her to the emergency room.

Once we got there they decided it would be best to give her some more benadryl to calm her down and calm down the side effects. After about fifteen minutes it seemed to work and she was acting almost normal again but she still had a puffy face.....she looked so sad!!

They sent us home reassuring us that she would be OK but that maybe she shouldn't get anymore shots.

This story has a happy ending. We kept checking up on her throughout the night and she seemed to be OK. This morning she was back to her old self again!!!! I was so relieved:) This dog is like my child and I was so mad at these doctors who almost killed my dog. The Vet needs to warn people before giving vaccinations!!!!!!!!!!!!!
